JOINT PRESERVATION

Cartilage and chondromalacia

Articular cartilage covers the joint surfaces. Treatment depends on the location and extent of damage and the individual’s overall knee condition.

01

What is patellar chondromalacia?

It refers to changes in the cartilage on the back of the kneecap. Pain at the front of the knee can also occur without these changes. Symptoms, examination and imaging need to be interpreted together.

02

Understanding the symptoms

Pain, swelling and limited movement can have different causes. An imaging finding must be considered alongside the clinical assessment.

03

Choosing an approach

Options may include rehabilitation, activity adjustments and selected surgical procedures. Alignment, stability and meniscus condition are part of the assessment.

04

Following progress

Weight-bearing and activity guidance depend on the treatment. Goals and limitations should be discussed before any procedure.
